Windows 10 flashing screen after login

A few days ago a customer brought in a windows 10 computer that had a problem with the screen flashing after login.  The screen would flash 20-30 times after login. It would behave normally until a window was opened or a menu accessed, and then the screen would flash 20-30 times again.  I did a lot of searching and the only things that came up were issues with Norton on the 10 preview and video drivers.  My customer's computer didn't have Norton, but I tried removing the anti-virus with no joy.  I also tried uninstalling and reinstalling the video drivers to no avail.  In desperation I tried creating a new user and that worked.  I don't know what in her original profile was wrong, but it was clearly something there.  If anyone has come across this issue and found a way to fix it without the hassle of moving profiles please speak up.

Windows 7 Update Rollup

It's the update rollup we have, not the service pack we wanted.  Like many I rejoiced upon hearing of the recently released Windows 7 update rollup.  I have found that it is not as cut and dried as running this update on a fresh install.  On the handfull of fresh Windows 7 SP1 installs I have done in the past couple of weeks I have found that there are a couple of other updates that must be installed first.  First you must install the latest windows update agent. Second you must install the April 2015 service stack update. I have found that a reboot between each update works best, but shouldn't be absolutely necessary.  Once those two updates are installed you can then install the update rollup.  Once you reboot after installing the rollup you may see a couple of processes hogging the cpu, but it should go away after a few minutes.  I have had one computer where it was stuck at 100% cpu and had to be reinstalled, but 1 out of 10-12 isn't too bad.

Dentrix G4 in Windows 7

In the past I had an issue installing Dentrix G4 updates on my customer's machines and I found a good blog that described how to get around this.  Unfortunately that blog has gone down, so I am going to recreate that post as best as I can here.

When you install Dentrix G4 on Windows 7 it will go smoothly until you try to apply the G4_7 update.  At that point it will give you an error that says something about the G4_6 update not being installed.  Assuming you have already installed G4_6, here is how you get around this error.

If you go to the Dentrix folder in Program Files you will see a folder called "Tutor4_6".  Renamed this folder to "temp", and the run ep.exe and point it to folder you renamed to temp and click OK.  After this is done you can apply he remaining G4 updates.  Once all the updates are installed run ep.exe again and point it back to your normal dentrix data folder.  That's all there is to it.

Importing profiles into Thunderbird 38

If you have been using the Lightning add-on for Thunderbird there is good news, as of version 38 Lightning is now included by default.  There is one catch I ran into, and this is definitely an edge case, I recently did a fresh install coming from an older version of the Lightning add-on.  When I copied the profile contents as I had done in the past everything was fine except Lighting was disabled and could not be enabled, I tried removing the add-on and reinstalling it but that did nothing.  While keeping my email is more important, having my calendar working is pretty important too.

Here is how I got it working.  First I went to another computer and installed an old version of Thunderbird and Lighting.  Then I copied my profile into this install, and I exported my calendar.  Then I went back to my main computer and created a new profile; and I imported my calendar file to this new profile.  Then I copied some of the files from my old profile, see screenshot below.  Basically I avoided copying anything related to add-ons, extensions, or calendars.  YMMV, but this has worked for me.

You don't need flash: disable it or remove it

Flash has problems and should be removed or disabled.

Disable Flash in Chrome:

If you use Chrome flash is built into the browser, but it can be disabled by going to chrome://plugins and clicking disable next to the flash entry.

If you use Internet Explorer (stop using it) or Firefox you can remove the flash plugins for these browsers by going to "Add/Remove Programs" in the control panel and clicking remove or uninstall.  Keep in mind that there are two different flash plugins one for IE and one for Firefox.  You should remove both.

If for some reason you are a masochist and only want to disable flash on IE or Firefox you can do the following.

Disable Flash in Internet Explorer:

In IE click on the tools menu or gear icon and then click on manage add-ons.  Make sure "Toolbars and Extensions" is highlighted in the left hand pane and you may also have to change the "Show:" drop menu to "show all."  Now highlight the entry for flash and click the disable button in the lower right hand corner of this window.

Disable Flash in Firefox:

In Firefox click on the menu button and then click on add-ons.  On the left hand side of the add-ons page click on plugins.  Then click on the drop down menu for the flash plugin and select never activate.

With all that said I will remind you that the best thing to do is to just remove the flash plugins for IE and Firefox.

Hate Windows 8 No More!

I have many customers that have a poor opinion of Windows 8, as I predicted this is because they do not like or are confused by the metro interface. Windows 8 is actually a very good operating system from a technical stand point. The fact remains that metro is a flaming bag of dog poo left on the doorstep of our keyboards and mice. The good news is that there is a program to fix that. Classic Shell brings back the start menu and skips metro. Rejoice and stop using XP; for the love of GOD!
